Get Political for Animals
"
'Get Political for Animals' will go down in history. Asked what
is the most effective way one can help the animals, I tell people:
'Buy this book! Open to page 1! Follow the instructions!'"-Rich
McLellan, Executive Director, League of Humane Voters, CA Chapter
Says
Ledy VanKavage, ASPCA Senior Director of Legal Training & Legislation:
"This book teaches you how to become an effective political
advocate, which is one of the most powerful and direct ways you
can become a voice for the animals. Politics is not a spectator
sport, and our furry friends are counting on you!"

DDB Poster Campaign
The
Dogs Deserve Better poster campaign hits five aspects of
our chained dog awareness efforts: physical needs, the generational
approach (passed down from generation to generation), legislation,
moral obligation and responsibility, and humane education
and emotional needs.
PLEASE
take action to educate in any way possible! We must help the
chained dogs and the penned dogs, because they cannot help themselves.
They deserve better than life on a chain/in a pen, and by placing
these posters near areas where chained dogs live, you make save
a life.

The
Number One Way to make a difference in the lives of chained dogs
and penned dogs in the short term is to get educational information
into the hands of the caretakers.

4 Choices, 7 Days to Vote, $1.00 per Vote Will it be Remo, Sadee, Buddie, or Sheena?
Welcome
to our Third Annual Group Vote for the
"Formerly-Chained-but-Now-Free-and-Lovin'-Life" Dogs Deserve Better
2010 Calendar Model! Each dog pictured was rescued from a chained or
penned life, and is now happy, loved, and FREE to enjoy life the way
dogs were meant to do...living as part of the family, with responsible
and understanding caretakers.
We've brought on the talented design services of Tracy Copes, Daftgeneration.com for this year's calendar, which promises to be more stunning than ever before! (And we think it was pretty special before!)
The rules are simple: the dog with the most votes will be our 2010 Cover Model! (But don't worry...they will all find a place INSIDE the calendar.)
Please limit your votes to 20 per person, in order to make the contest
fair to all income levels...any votes over 20 per person will not be
counted, but we are always grateful for the additional donation! The last day to vote is September 30, so hurry! (Note:
all 20 votes may be placed in one interaction so you don't need to come
back. Your votes count as a charitable donation, and are tax deductible
in accordance with IRS regulations.)
And Remember:
Please VOLUNTEER - or help through a DONATION -- every additional voice & every single dollar will strengthen our cause & expand the hope of dogs everywhere!

PA's Wall of Shame Goes from Virtual to REAL!

Pennsylvania's
Wall of Shame just went from Virtual to REAL, and was viewed by as many
as 5000 people this weekend in Pennsylvania at Awareness Day and
Woofstock!
The DDB Booth even won Best Booth at Woofstock as a result.
This
album shows the building of the Pennsylvania Wall of Shame, created by
Dogs Deserve Better founder and CEO Tamira Ci Thayne, with partner
Joseph Horvath. It features dogs from 25 of the 67 counties still
chained at this moment, and still waiting for a law. We need photos
from all 67 counties! If you have a chained dog in your area, please
e-mail photos with county name to photos@dogsdeservebetter.org. PA has
a bill in committee, HB 1254, and we need EVERYONE in PA's help to get
this bill out of committee and onto the floor for a vote. Please visit
http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org
http://www.unchainpadogs.com
to
see all the photos of chained dogs still waiting for a law, learn more
about the bill, and see how you can help move this bill along.
Do you have a place in Pennsylvania we could feature this Wall of Shame for a week at a time? Call 814.940.7447 if so.

School's in Session
(Time to buy Puddles on the Floor for the Classes on Humane Education!)
School's back in session, and Speak for Animals in Greenville, SC just bought 50 Puddles on the Floor books for the student libraries in their Humane Education program.
Are
you a humane educator, or do you just want to help educate the children
in grades 2-6 in your school district? What about making a purchase of
Puddles on the Floor for them? Each
books brings out the following humane issues for your children: stray,
overpopulation, shelter, crowding chaining (of course), and dangers to
pets left free to roam.
For special pricing on the books for your humane education work, please give us a call at 814.941.7447.
Remember, also, if you work in classes there's a companion cd which you will find invaluable. We used it in classes with Kindergartners last year in combination with Buddy Unchained, and they and the teachers all loved it.

A
pastor was convicted of a misdemeanor animal-cruelty charge and
sentenced to one day in jail, three months' probation and a $50 fine,
according to court records. Four other counts of the same charge were
dropped when he appeared in area court here Tuesday.
Timothy L.
Hayes, 35, of East Western Reserve Road, had been charged with five
counts of animal cruelty in July when he left four dogs and a rabbit
unattended while he and his family apparently attended a church camp.
Hayes will pay $275 in fees, including the fine, court records show.
One
dog was confined to a breezeway, two were staked together in a doghouse
and the fourth was staked outside without shelter, according to a
police report. The rabbit was in a cage.
The three dogs that were staked outside had to be euthanized.

Here's the address of the church:
Woodworth Church of The Brethren
30 E Western Reserve Rd Youngstown, OH 44514
The
church also owns the property where the animals had been located, if
you would like to request that this church stop allowing animal cruelty
on it's property and by those in charge of 'the flock'.
Speaking of Disturbing
Thayne (formerly Tammy Grimes) will be back in court on Friday morning,
September 25th, in a second attempt to go over DA Richard Consiglio's
head and take the Arnolds to trial for abuse in the Doogie Case.
The case is at 10:00 a.m. in Courtroom #3 if you can make it. Hollidaysburg, PA 423 Allegheny Street.
Her
attorney, Phil Robertson, was in court in Pittsburgh earlier this month
arguing her appeal. No word yet on any decisions in that case.
