Dogs Deserve Better E-News 09/25/08 |

Dear Tammy,
In a sagging economy, people
who took poor care of their chained/penned dogs are now facing money woes
resulting in backyard dogs needing more help than ever before. This is the best
time for DDB to get these dogs off chains, but the worst time for us to find
funding for vetting and transportation.
As a nonprofit we wrestle
with a troubled economy that causes increased need and higher costs. Our Reps are the backbone of DDB and without
money for gas and vetting they struggle to continue to rescue. This is why we
need to fight harder to raise funds to save our forgotten friends. At DDB we
never say die, we push on through adversity and will rise to the top because
for us, it's all about the dogs.
Through solid financial times
as well as bad, the eyes of the forgotten and forlorn backyard dog never
flicker. They wait for their family, for food, for clean water and can we
honestly say we won't help them because we don't have enough money?
History of our economic cycle
runs in patterns, but the cycle of abuse for the backyard dog never wavered
until Dogs Deserve Better came into the picture. Please help us to continue to bring happy days
to our chained/penned best friends.

Trick or Treat for DDB!
If you and your children will be
out "trick or treating" this year, have the kids
create a donation box or bucket for Dogs Deserve Better. When knocking on doors ask the homeowner if
he/she would like to donate to help dogs as you hold up the bucket and hand
them a brochure.
Whoever raises the most money
and sends it in will be the lucky recipient of a "Puddles Pak" for their own "Puddle's Party"!
Whether you knock on doors, have a party at school, visit relatives, have an
alternative to trick or treating party at church, it's a fun way to raise money
and get brochures into the hands of people. Or just create your own donation
bucket and ask the local gas station or convenience store if you can place it
on the counter through the month of October.
If you are interested, please
email kim@dogsdeservebetter.org
and tell her how many brochures you will need along with your address. When donations are raised, send them to
DDB,
PO Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684
with the amount raised and a picture/letter.
Now my mind is reeling with ideas I can put a costume on my dogs
and take them "trick or treating" for donations! Be inventive and help
raise money for the dogs.

DDB Begins Collecting Items for Ebay Auction
We are now starting to collect items for one of DDB's
biggest annual fundraisers! Donating
items for the DDB Ebay Auction is a great way to get rid of some 'stuff' and
help raise money for the dogs. Whether you have new items or services to
donate, handmade items or collectables, we will sell them for the dogs.
Send your items to
Dogs Deserve Better, PO
Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684
We can send a donation receipt if requested along with the
value of the item and your return address. Thank you so much for your donations!

DDB Names Rep of the Year
So many of our Reps stand out amongst the others, so many have had laws
changed, rescues, and successes, that it's virtually impossible to be
fair to everyone.
It
was
a difficult decision, as always, because we wish we could award each
and every one of our Reps with "Rep of the Year", but the final
decision went to a Rep who has been with us for years.
She
has built many
fences, spoken to countless caretakers while showing up on their
doorsteps with treats and a smile, asking if she could help their
chained or penned dogs. She has provided training and
vetting, much at her own cost. She has rescued, fostered and
rehabilitated many dogs and been nipped a few times along the way. She
was a great regional coordinator and keeps in touch with area reps,
giving advice and support. She has had
many rescued dogs in the DDB calendars. She worked hard
during
DDB's Chain-Off in Atlanta, Georgia, setting it up and took exceptional
care of the 15 people being chained.
Our pick for DDB Representative of the Year goes to Pam Cheatham of
Conyers, Georgia.

ATLANTA DOG WHISPERER INSTANTLY REHABILITATES TROUBLED CHOW
In
January of 2008, I resuced five dogs and two cats from a gas chamber at
the Spalding County Animal Control in Georgia. One of the dogs, a chow,
