| Save the Bears! Bears? |
Dogs Deserve Better E-News 9/25/07 |
|
Dear Tammy,
Bears! We have so many Bears at Dogs Deserve
Better, we thought it was high time for you to meet a few! We have tree
Bears and success Bears, and Bears who need a helping hand. Not bears
in the sense of omnivorous mammals with shaggy coats and a short tail
who live in the woods, mountains or Arctic, but Bears in the sense of
dogs named "Bear."
As long as we are on this subject it's time for Dogs Deserve
Better to "Bear up" now that we know how important we are to you. Yes, your votes put us at #2 for the People's Choice EPhilanthropy Award and we take that seriously. There's nothing like the support of our friends to push us ahead and make us stronger!
No, Dogs Deserve Better is not really about bears, but we'd like you to bear in mind that we are not just about dogs either. Dogs Deserve Better is dedicated to helping people and their pets live higher quality lives
and we do that through education, fencing projects, training and
re-homing. DDB is a long overdue outlet for neighbors who have endured
tremendous stress watching the dogs next door suffer needlessly on the
end of a chain or in a pen. We are an organization where ordinary
people from all over the United States and many parts of the world who
are filled with compassion, a love for animals and a common goal have
come together to become extraordinary heroes.
Dogs Deserve Better is not about bears, but we are about bringing
the backyard dog into the home and family and we are a family bringing
the backyard dog into homes. We promise to bear down to save even more
dogs from a 24/7 life on a chain or in a pen and we are thankful to
have your support as we do! Now let's meet those BEARS! |

Update: Blind Bear Finds the Perfect Home
Bear, the Blind Chow has found the perfect home! He not only has a new family, but a new name and is the 2nd blind Bear to join this awesome pack!
Read what Bear's new family has to say about him!
Bear (Now Yogi) is living large. He and Smokey (yes, you guessed it - Smokey Bear) also blind are the best of buddies.
They are tolerant of each other, even when they plow
into and step on or over one another; we are astonished at how well
they manage themselves. Mona Lisa, our princess, is still trying to decide
if Yogi can join our pack. Given that she seems to understand she has
no choice, she has deigned to receive him, however reluctantly. Read more

Success Stories! Mr. Bear Finds His Pack!
Bear, an emaciated chained rescue dog,
brought tears to the eyes of Indiana Rep Marie Belanger and Bear's
neighbor when they brushed him for the first time and hit his backbone
with the brush, which caused him to flinch in pain. Bear's thick coat
hid his bony body.
Bear is such a sweet guy, he yearned for love and ignores food and treats, even ice-cold water on a hot day, just to get hugs.
He buries his face in your chest and snuggles up under your chin and gives kisses and kisses!
After
being chained to a tree for three years, two years without
even a dog house, Belanger brought him to Marion and vaccinated him,
treated him for Heartworm and neutered him.
He
was taken in by a foster who could not help but fall in love with
him; she has two dogs that look just like him! Bear's
foster home became his FOREVER home! Good boy, Mr. Bear!

Bear Stuck in a Tree!
Can You Help Him Get Down?
Bear is a beautiful 12-month old white Lab mix in Illinois. Poor Bear has been chained his entire life and lives in a tree. Yes, a tree.
His doghouse was destroyed in a storm and has yet to be replaced,
so he perched himself in the tree he is chained to and that is where he
lives.
Obviously this form of confinement creates quite a funny picture, but on the other hand is very sad and potentially dangerous.
Unless someone steps in, Bear will never know what it's like to
run and play, to love, to cuddle, to be the best friend he was born to
be.

Featured Adoptable BABY (BEAR?), Ohio
This is Baby. Until recently, she had spent her life on a chain.
When Baby came to our rescue, her choke collar was embedded into her neck and had to be surgically removed.
Baby is approximately two years old. She is
SO lovable! She gets very excited when she sees her foster
mom.
Baby is a little nervous around men and boys but as we all know
she will get past that, once she meets some that treat her like the
princess she is.
As Baby likes to have her humans to herself - she would prefer to be the only dog in her family.
Baby is spayed, heartworm negative and up-to-date on shots (thanks DDB).
If you can offer Baby a loving, stable home, where she will live as part of the family, please contact Marla: crzylovindoglady@yahoo.com.

Are You a Rescue Angel?
Show your commitment to animal rescue with a "Rescue Angel" Tattoo.
"If you are in rescue, you are most
definitely an angel for the animals, and have probably saved countless
dogs/cats from certain death, either along the highway, in a shelter,
or dying abandoned and alone in a backyard. Tossed carelessly aside by
members of our society that either don't know, don't care, or turn a
blind eye to what becomes of the animals."

The New DDB Brochures are HERE!
The NEW, 5th Anniversary, Dogs Deserve Better brochures have arrived.
These handouts are full color, better than ever, more kid-friendly (no
graphic images), 18 photos in one tri-fold brochure(!), easy-reading,
and even includes information on dog fighting! The content places
emphasis on bringing your best friend into the home and family, and is
written from the dog's perspective.
The number one way to make a difference in the lives of chained dogs
and penned dogs in the short term is to get educational information
into the hands of the caretakers.
These brochures will help you do that. Keep them in your car to
deliver wherever you see a chained dog or penned dog; if part of a
humane agency or rescue group, hand them out at booths, adoption fairs,
or send out with packets; as an animal control officer or
policeman/woman, pass them out to those keeping chained dogs or penned
dogs, dogs in need of help and better living conditions.
