Dear (Contact First Name),
Announcing Job
The 2009 Calendar Cover Winner!
$1 Off DDB Calendar
Pre-Orders through November 7th!
Welcome
to the Fourth Annual Dogs Deserve Better Calendar, which marks six years of Dogs Deserve Better. This year we've outdone ourselves, or shall we
say you've outdone yourselves!
We've
compiled 28 dog rescue stories for you-all Happy Endings of course-and you'll
come to know the dogs in a new way as you read their touching stories each
month!
We
had a great time pulling together a gorgeous, full color calendar, and an
especially good time designing 6 covers for you to choose our winning cover
model. Thanks to the concerted efforts of Rhonda Sims, who campaigned
extensively for votes for her rescued boy Job. Job was the winner this year with
almost 700 votes! Never fear, though, all of our gorgeous calendar cover model
contestants will appear somewhere within our calendar-they will still get their
time in the sun!
Calendars
will begin shipping November 15th.

Little Rock's Open Family Approach
Tracy
Rourke, Animal Control Manager is proud of his community and their work
with chained dogs. He says, "We are not 100% compliant in the whole
city but we will not stop until we are." The law
has been in effect for 5 years. In the beginning the community launched
a major PR campaign with many advertising notices, flyers, newspaper
ads and information on the government access channels, notifying the
public of the law changes. Now, if they find a dog caretaker not in
compliance, they simply issue a citation. Rourke says, "We (animal
control and government officials) came to the conclusion that companion
animals need to be part of the family. We want dogs to be pets. Public
safety is our number one concern, but we haven't had the problem with
"breed banning and pit bull banning" like our neighboring communities
because there are no junk yard dogs."
Rourke has taken an "open
family approach" to their pet population. We are very open when people
call in. We want people to call us when they are concerned about a
neighbor's dog. Our officers don't wear badges; we meet and greet the
public with solutions." I guess this is why when Tami and Dawn went to
Little Rock on their Dognamic Duo Tour
they found few backyard dogs and a pet friendly community in Rourke's
jurisdiction, but just outside the city, where tethering laws were not
in place they found row after row of chained and suffering dogs.
To find out more about Little Rock's tethering restrictions click here or adopt a pet from Little Rock.
Note: Little Rock does require special licensing and spay/neuter of Bully breed dogs. Though DDB does agree that pets should be spayed/neutered, we do not agree that any breed should be singled out.
A special thank you to Emily Pennel from Unchain Your Dog for being instrumental in passing the Little Rock tethering law.

Puddles on the Floor by Lorena Estep, Illustrated by DDB Founder Tamira Ci Thayne
Testimonial from Pauline Larsen, Columnist, Humane Education, DDB Rep:
I just received Puddles On The Floor,
and have read it three times. I am convinced that we need to get copies
of this book in as many elementary school libraries as possible. What
an awesome educational tool this is!! I will be sending a donation to
get multiple copies to distribute to schools, and hope my action will
encourage others to do the same. Education is the key to improving the
plight of needy dogs, and this book can change attitudes.I AM
IMPRESSED, and I encourage YOU to order multiple copies to distribute
in your area!"
