Dogs Deserve Better E-News 10/23/07 |
|
Dear Tammy,
At DDB, we often hear from those opposed of anti-tethering
legislation and tethering limits that there are already laws to protect
dogs from abuse.
Unfortunately, those laws are only enforced (and often are not
enforced) when the abuse has become so horrendous that the law is
forced to take action or has the power to take action at all.
Backyard dogs on chains and in pens must endure pain, dehydration,
malnutrition and starvation before any action can be taken. Ask anyone
who has lived next door to a backyard dog what happens when they call
the police or animal control with concern over a neighbor's dog and
they can tell you what we all hear over and over again: " All the law
requires is shelter, food and water and that the dog be confined to the
owner's property. There is nothing we can do."
"YOU GAVE ME A HOUSE WHEN WHAT I NEED IS A HOME" is a new slogan
of Dogs Deserve Better because the minimum requirements of food, water
and shelter have proved time and time again NOT TO BE ENOUGH. Join us
as we discuss recent cases of chained/penned abuse and how YOU CAN
BRING HAPPINESS to a formally chained or penned abused/neglected dog.

Featured Adoptable Trajan, New York
Trajan is a sweet senior, blind Rottie who has spent his entire life on a chain.
This
boy was rescued from his horrible life, but is now living in a kennel,
where he is not receiving the attention he deserves.
Trajan is just a love! We would be thrilled to find him a wonderful home in which to spend his remaining years.
Trajan gets along with everyone he meets! He is good with dogs and cats! He just wants a warm house with a soft dog bed and lots of love.
Despite his years of neglect -- Trajan is very good natured - and his "handicap" does not hold him back in the least.
Trajan is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations and is in very good health for his age!
If you have room in your home and in your heart for Trajan, please contact Doreen Nespolini: 718- 994-1220, doreennes@gmail.com

Success Stories: Sophia Chained Dog Turned Calendar Super Model!

Please congratulate Sophia, as she is one of the winners of DDB's 2008 calendar model contest! below is the story of how this sweet girl went from Cinderella to super model!
Sophia
(formerly Angel) lived chained to a tree 24/7/365 on the property of a
foreclosed home in Marshall's Creek (Monroe County, PA).
The house was unoccupied and slated for sheriff's sale.
Sophia
had a padlock hanging from her neck; she paced a semi-circle down to
bare rock. Sophia had only sporadic access to food and water. A broken,
undersized and uninsulated carrier was her shelter from years of
freezing winters and feet of snow. Occasionally, her former "owner"
would stop by to dump some kibble on the ground. Read more

Justice for Sassy
Judge Takes Stand for Chained Dog
Illinois Representative, Dawn Ashby,
discovered Sassy and Shadow when she stopped by the road in the rain to
untangle the tethers of two playful puppies who could not access
the doghouse they shared. Below is an accounting of this story in
Ashby's own words.
I remember thinking at that moment, I wish I could
rescue these pups now while they are easy to adopt than later when they
are older.
There was no doubt in my mind that these dogs would eventually
be surrendered to DDB when they became a 'problem' for their
owner. I put a brochure with my phone number inside the front door. Read more

Saving Tuff and Pups DDB Rep Picks Up the Pieces of an Abused Dog

When DDB Representative, Heather Willis discovered that a female dog had a gun stuck in her mouth, was shot and then delivered 6 puppies, she rushed to the rescue to find a sweet mamma and her precious babies in desperate need of veterinary care.
From
Heather: "I can't even begin to tell you what terrible shape (the
mother) is in. She could easily stand to gain 30 lbs.
She looks to me to be a Labrador Retriever but she is nothing but skin
and bones so hard to tell by only a skeletal form. She is very smart,
follows commands like sit, stay, and walks on a leash as well as very
social and not in the least bit timid. She has a wonderful spirit
and is great with kids."
The
momma, "Tuff," had taken a bullet in through her mouth and when it hit
her jaw it actually split in two pieces. One piece went up
through her cleft palat leaving an open hole 1/2 inch wide so each
time she eats food lodges feeding the infection. That part
continued up through her and into her head. The caved in part of
her head is nerve damage and atrophy. The 2nd fragment went
through her jaw at a downward angle and did more nerve damage in her
throat. There is still lead in her sinuses.
The
vet has started her on antibiotics, fluids, and a diet made for her
needs. Tuff is scheduled for surgery on Monday to close the
hole. The vet thinks she will be able to get weight on her
and back to a decent quality of life soon
Tuff
and her 6 pups need very special foster and forever
homes! Tuff is truly a miracle in herself and only deserves
to be treated like the queen she is.
If you are interested in fostering or adoption contact: heatherw610@hotmail.com
Please help Tuff get back on her feet by donating to her medical fund. |
