Dear Tammy,

Valentine's for Chained Dogs CampaignIt's time again to "Spread Some LOVE" to chained dogs all across the country during Dogs Deserve Better Valentine Campaign 2008!

DDB sent 7232 Valentines to families of chained dogs in 2007; will we meet or exceed our goal of 8000 this year?  With your help we can!

DDB needs addresses for perpetually chained dogs, volunteers to make Valentines, and donations of dog treats, or coupons to buy dog treats.

"This is the perfect opportunity for people who pass chained dogs every day,or who live next door to these poor animals, but feel powerless to help," says Tammy Grimes.

"People can anonymously provide us with the addresses of these dogs, or perhaps make a batch of Valentines, and we do the rest."

Successes take place every year from our grassroots direct mail campaign. "Of course, we always get angry calls from people who are mired in habit or tradition and don't see anything wrong with chaining a dog for 10 or 15 years. However, on the flip side, we always learn of situations where the recipients of our Valentines take the opportunity to think about the suffering they are causing and either bring the dog inside or find the dog a better home."

The creation of the Valentines is an ideal project for schools, scouting troops, and other similar organizations. "Children have a natural affinity for animals and they enjoy making art projects," says Grimes, an artist herself.

A Home for the Holidays!
Tuff, mother dog who was shot, finds love in a forever home

Tuff in her new home

Tuff, now known as Hannah Lee, was rescued by West Frankfort, Illinois DDB Rep,Heather Willis after the dog had been shot twice in the mouth and survived to give birth to puppies.

With donations from supporters and help from DDB, Hannah has undergone two extensive surgeries to remove shell casings, bone fragments and to reconstruct her jaw. She is doing fabulously.

Hannah was transported to Pennsylvania to her new forever home by foster mom, Dawn Ashby.

At home in PA with her new parents, Woody and Ann, Hannah has learned some fresh tricks like turning on the lights!  Ann only laughs and says, "There goes our power bill!"

As for Hannah Lee's new Dad, he jokes that they may need one more surgery just to remove her from his leg since they've become so bonded!

It's been a long, hard road for Hannah Lee, but at last she's receiving all the love she needs!

The pups have been adopted into forever inside homes as well, the last being Cupcake who lives in St. Louis, MO where a tethering limit bill is being signed by the Mayor!

Pictures of your dogs with their gifts are coming in, so keep checking our Holiday Sponsor Dogs page for updates!

A big thank you to all, your donations this year also resulted in saving a family's Christmas

Sandy at Chain Off 2007

When Sandy Lynn, St. Louis, flew to Atlanta, Georgia for DDB's Chain-Off she had no idea that her City's own tethering bill would be so close behind her.

Sandy told DDB, "The day this law goes into effect will be one of the proudest of my life.  I am so happy that the dogs living at the ends of chains will have a little more protection and hopefully better lives.  I could not have done it without the help of Stray Rescue of St. Louis, and OF COURSE, Dogs Deserve Better."

St. Louis, MO- The Board of Aldermen passed a bill saying no dog owner can leave a dog or cat tethered outside for 10 continuous hours or more than 12 hours a day. It also requires harnesses and collars to properly fit and be made of nylon or leather. Tethers should be in proportion to the animal's size, the bill said. The tether would have to be 15 feet long and the animal would have to have access to sufficient food and water. Mayor Francis Slay plans to sign the bill, which would immediately become law.
