5th anniversary
Dear Tammy,

As Dogs Deserve Better continues its 5th Anniversary Celebration, we realize our trials and tribulations are far from over.

With the recent news of the brutal killings of dogs found on NFL Atlanta Falcon's Quarterback Michael Vick's property, we are shocked back to the reality of the horrors inflicted upon some of these chained dogs.

During this time of legal conflict and critique of our insufficient animal laws, we are also reminded of the trial of our founder, Tammy Grimes, for saving a dying dog's life. During this time of revelation one must ask: whom would you convict? Michael Vick for fighting, torturing and killing dogs or Tammy Grimes for saving a dying dog's life when no one else would come forward to help? It is difficult to conceive that both are on trial because of dogs when their positions are so opposite. The biggest difference in these cases may be that Tammy Grimes is not asking for forgiveness, she is asking for justice.

Tom Reagan said: "All great movements, it is written, go through three stages: ridicule, discussion, adoption. It is the realization of this third stage, adoption that requires our passion and our discipline, our hearts and our heads. The fate of animals is in our hands."

No one knows these three stages better than Dogs Deserve Better. As Dogs Deserve Better moves closer to the stage of discussion and into adoption, we hope you can see that the fate of the backyard dog really is in your hands.

Your membership is your voice and together our voices are breaking chains! Friends, we want to thank you for your continued support. At DDB we are a team and each dog freed from life on a chain or in a pen, each law passed and each owner educated, is a direct result of your contribution to our TEAM effort! If you are not yet a member, please consider joining us during our 2007 membership drive, as we continue our celebration of Dogs Deserve Better's 5th Anniversary!
Foster or Adopt BBAdopt or Foster a Rescued Dog

Many DDB Rescues like Spicy "Bean Burrito" here, aka B.B.  (Note: This is what happens when you promise the kids they can name the dog!) are waiting anxiously for Foster Homes and Forever Homes!

The truth is, we could rescue twice as many dogs if we had a place to put them...or homes for current fosters.

If you could give one of our precious babies a home, or provide foster care for a dog off a chain, please visit: http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/adopt.html
and fill out the online adoption form or
http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/volunteer.html and fill out the foster form  today to make a difference in a previously chained dog's life!

Buster is in desperate need of a foster or forever home. Will you help?

Pasadena, MD- Buster is skinny and the flies have given him a couple of marks on his ears, but he is such a wonderful little boy you just have to love him! His owners had him on a 2" chain wrapped around a tree, no food/water or shelter. He is 3 years old, house-trained, very well mannered and very loving.

If you can find a place in your heart and home, would you please consider being this handsome boy's salvation? Contact Tara Ekstrom at 410-360-0411 or e-mail tekstm@arinc.com

DDB on Dog Fighting

 Chained Pitbull Puppies
As the Michael Vick case unfolds and the crack down on dog fighting continues, we will all be reading about, hearing talk of, and discussing this subject, with our peers.  Dogs Deserve Better wishes to remind everyone that chaining and dog fighting go hand in hand. Dogfighters know that the surest way to make a dog vicious is to keep it on a chain. If dogfighters can understand this simple equation of chaining=aggression then surely our government can also understand. Now is the time to be pushing for those anti- tethering and chaining limits in your community!

While the issue is a hot topic for discussion, seize the opportunity to educate others on the dangers of chaining by acknowledging that chaining is the  very tactic dogs fighters use in order to cause their fighting dogs to become more aggressive.

Meet Puggie! Another Dogs Deserve Better Rescue!
Puggie
Illinois-
After Puggie's owners of 3 years remodeled their home, they found that Puggie no longer matched their carpeting!  Puggie's shedded fur was just too visible on the new carpet, so out the door and on the  chain Puggie went!

A neighbor and friend of DDB heard little Puggie's cries and his owners agreed to surrender him.  Puggie is a 3 year old male Pug (x), neutered and completely housebroken.

Poor Puggie...if only he were born a chamelion!

Success Stories

Lucky's Only Voice

Toronto, Ontario - Ten months ago, Maria Tzavaras was walking back from the corner store and heard the heart breaking whine of a dog she couldn't see.

After speaking to a neighbor, she found the dog lived next door and Maria was welcome to come into his backyard and take a look through his fence. What she saw sickened her.

A poor hound-mix, not only completely enclosed in a fence, but within the enclosure there was a doghouse to which he was also chained. He suffered this way in minus 35 and plus 35-degree weather, alone and never walked.  Read more

Grimes Trial Continued Again...

Tammy rescues Doogie

DDB Founder, Tammy Sneath Grimes' trial over rescuing a dying dog
has been a long hard road with a lot of U-turns!  If we have learned anything from the Doogie Trial, it's that court appearance is subject to immediate or not so immediate change.

8.27.07 Grimes showed up for her jury selection, only to find out that the trial had been continued again. The DA requested another continuance, and was granted one by the judge, even though Grimes attorney objected. The paper newsletter that are just coming out state the trial is September 13th...please disregard that! We did warn everyone...seems nothing is as you think it will be when it comes to this trial. We will update again as soon as we know more. In the meantime, please continue to call the DA's office and tell them to stop postponing the hearing. They do so love to hear from our supporters!

We Love, We Love, We Love Our Calendar Dogs...

Connor

Each and Every Day of the Year!  Why does DDB love their calendar dogs so much? Because each and every one of them was a formally chained/penned abused/neglected dog rescued by Dogs Deserve Better!  Due to  the enormous strides our team has taken in rescue, our 2008 Calendar of Chained and Penned Dog Rescue Successes is sure to be the best ever!

A note to our Reps:  If you've rescued a chained or penned dog, and can send before/after pics in high resolution along with 3 paragraphs, your dog's story will be considered for the 2008, 14-month calendar, which will feature 28 dogs and their stories. If you don't have a before picture, your dog still can be considered for the small features with just an after shot.

This year we plan to vote on the cover photo for the first time, so even if you've had a rescue in our calendars in the past, feel free to take a gorgeous photo of your dog and enter him/her into our cover contest! We will choose 5-10 great shots for everyone to vote on.

Whose face will grace the cover of our 2008 calendar? Will it be Connor from British Columbia (pictured above) or maybe Levi, the little Cocker Spaniel rescued by Tammy Grimes or any one of the hundreds of other chained/penned dogs rescued by Dogs Deserve Better Representatives all across the U.S. and Canada!

Please note: All dogs in the calendar MUST have lived chained/penned to be considered.

Email your hi-resolution photos and stories to Dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org by September 15th, 2007 to be considered.

Don't forget to watch for the 2008 Dogs Deserve Better  Calendar when it goes on sale!  They make great gifts with proceeds going to an even greater cause!
The New DDB Brochures are...
New Brochure
finally HERE! Well, not exactly here yet...but they are at press, and are expected to arrive in-house September 10th.

The NEW, 5th Anniversary, Dogs Deserve Better brochures.
Full color, better than ever, more kid-friendly (no graphic images), 18 photos in one tri-fold brochure(!), easy-reading, and even includes dog-fighting!
Puts total emphasis on bringing your best friend into the home and family, and is written from the dog's perspective.

The Number One Way to make a difference in the lives of chained dogs and penned dogs in the short term is to get educational information into the hands of the caretakers.

These brochures will help you do that. Keep them in your car to deliver wherever you see a chained dog or penned dog; if part of a humane agency or rescue group, hand them out at booths, adoption fairs, or send out with packets; as an animal control officer or policeman/woman, pass them out to those keeping chained dogs or penned dogs, dogs in need of help and better living conditions.
