Gas Too Expensive? Just Chain Yourself, No Driving Required!

Dogs Deserve Better E-News 06/03/08 |
|
Dear Tammy,
Only three weeks to go before Chain-Off 2008! What? Three weeks and we still have many states not represented!
You can help change that just by giving up a few hours one day
between June 27th through July 7th and staying close to the house -
doghouse that is.
It's simple; go to http://www.unchainourworld.com, fill out the chain-off form
and chain yourself anywhere you like, even your own yard. Could
taking a stand against the abuse of the 24/7-chained backyard dog get
any easier?
You can even join us in Chicago on June 28th to represent your state while being chained at the main event. Take a look at these Chicago exhibitors coming out to show their support for Dogs Deserve Better.
Put yourself in a dog's paws and chain yourself from 8-24
hours anytime from June 27th through July 7th. Get friends and
family to sponsor you on this sheet (like a walk-a-thon) or at this link
so you can raise money for our work while you're whiling away the
hours. Talk to the media, get photos and send DDB a write-up about your
experience.
Absolutely cannot do it? Then help by sponsoring a Chain-Off Team
near you! Hurry! Don't wait another minute! The chained dogs all
over the world need you to be their voices! Join us today!

Are Backyard Dogs More Susceptible to Skin Cancer?
 11
years in the sun is taking its toll on Mollie, says Rose Gordon,
caretaker of a rescued 24/7-chained Black Lab. After having 4
tumors removed Mollie has more skin cancers.
Rose's veterinarian said that they are just like skin cancers in
people when they are exposed to the sun too much. All of those years of
Mollie lying chained with her black coat attracting the hot sun have
resulted in skin cancers.
Skin cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer found in
dogs, says Kevin A. Hahn, DVM, PhD, director of oncology services at
Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas. In fact, nearly
one-third of all dogs diagnosed with cancer have a tumor that
originated on the skin. Because a dog has fur does not mean it is
immune to the diseases of the skin, such as cancer. Join DDB's Annual Chain-Off Awareness Event and take a stand against the 24/7 chaining of the backyard dog. | |
Success Stories
Indiana Jones Escapes Death & Finds Love

When one of Mitch & Debbie Vaughn's sons called to say, "Mom! You've got to see this dog on petfinder.com!"
The Vaughn's didn't know how, but knew the long search for their perfect pet had almost come to an end.
Now here are two people more than four hours away wishing for the
exact dog that was found dragging his broken chain down a sidewalk,
taken to the pound and was about to be euthanized in Illinois and the
Vaughn's live in Missouri.
Popeye Boards the Freedom Train!

Thanks to the efforts of DDB Rep, Alicia Schwartz and transport
coordinator, Rhonda Simms, Popeye, one of the chained dogs

Featured Adoptables
Maya, Illinois

Maya is a 4-year-old white German Shepherd mix (maybe Samoyed?).
When she was two, her owners moved and left her behind, chained
outside. The new owners of the house decided to keep her, but were
providing less than adequate care and socialization. Maya was
chained to a concrete stairwell leading to a basement.
Fortunately, Maya was rescued by a dedicated Animal Cruelty Investigator, and is now looking for her real forever home. Read more. Adopt Maya : Maya's video
Little Man, Kentucky

Little Man is living on a chain in the county and his people want
us to find him a home. Little Man was purchased by his caretaker in
Arkansas when he was 8 weeks old. He is a sweet dog who deserves
a better life. He is now about 7 months old, good with other dogs,
cats, and kids according to the owner. He loves to play. Would you want
to help get this sweet dog off the chain and into a home? Please
contact: Donna, dwhite@aggressiveonline.net.

Freedom Print Gives 50% of Proceeds to DDB through July 4th
Chia, second of the Freedom Prints: This print will give 50% of the proceeds to Dogs Deserve Better through July 4th!
In America, one never knows the importance of freedom until it
is taken away. How many chained dogs in America lived inside the home
until they 'got too big', or 'chewed something up' and then got thrown
outside? How did they feel having freedom one day and losing it to a
chain the next? Chained dogs deserve to be free and part of the family
just as we do; yet some of them will never again know it despite our
best efforts.
This poignant piece features Chia, with her
before and after shots, an Akita who deserved and finally got better
before it was too late. She spent most of her life penned and then
chained in Indiana, was rescued by DDB reps, and finally ended up in
Pennsylvania.
