Dear Tammy,

Deserve Better celebrates every Valentine's Day by asking guardians to pay special attention to their best friends.  These friends are not like yours or mine, because these friends live chained or penned every day of their lives, isolated in backyards all across America and beyond. Here are some simple suggestions we give to caretakers:

  • take your dog for a walk
  • play ball with your dog in the yard
  • give your dog a good brushing
  • give your dog an extra dog treat
  • pet your dog longer than usual
  • LET YOUR DOG INTO THE HOUSE
  • snuggle with your dog when you're watching TV

Just imagine what a Valentine's Day it would be if every 24/7 backyard dog received this treatment even just one day a year?  Our hope is that caretakers will have a heart and change they way they treat their best friends forever.  Sadly, for many, dogs live chained/penned 24/7 rarely getting the food, water, shelter they need,  let alone the attention that pack animals like dogs crave from their pack leaders.

That's why with your help we are sending Valentines to chained/penned dog caretakers along with educational materials and coupons in hope that they will bring their dogs into their home and family.

Here's where you come in...
  • Make Valentine's for Chained/Penned Dogs
  • Send treat and food coupons with Valentines
  • Send addresses of chained/penned dogs to us
  • Donate postage...we're sending 12,500 this year
  • Send all to DDB, PO Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684

Love Comes In All Shapes and Sizes

Bella is one of more than a dozen stray dogs that have found a home at the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. Most want nothing to do with the elephants and vice versa, but not this odd couple, Tarra the 8,700 pound Asian elephant and Bella the dog are best friends.

"When it's time to eat they both eat together. They drink together. They sleep together. They play together," Buckley says.

Tarra and Bella have been close for years -- but no one really knew how close they were until recently.  To find out more watch http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4696315n

Rescuers Have A Heart For A Chained Dog
Ohio- Meet Fox

He lives near Logan, Ohio. Fox has not had a very good life. He has been in the same spot for at least four years in an area that is known for extreme flooding. Jim and Beth have been working with Marla at Dogs Deserve Better since January 17th.  Fox has been chained to a log chain by a tight choker collar that constantly rubs, pulls and chokes against his neck.   His paws are cold and tender from the freezing snow and ice

Marla is working hard trying to find Fox a new home. Jim and Beth have made several visits with Fox. Last Friday they went to tell him that everyone has been working very hard to get him off of that chain and out of the mud and that help is on the way. Soon he will be out of there and will never have to be on another chain again.  They petted him for quite a while. He was a very good boy. He really loved the attention.  Fox in Car

Fox's guardian has agreed to surrender and Fox is searching for the ideal foster or forever home. Fox Inside with Cat

Pennsylvania- Another Child Killed by Chained Dog

Chained animals often become vicious

Watch News Coverage

My heart broke to read about the dog mauling death of an 8-year-old Beaver County girl Brianna Shanor ("Dog kills Beaver girl, 8," Jan. 20).

As the founder and director of a nonprofit dedicated to ending the brutal, abusive practice of keeping dogs chained for their lives, I am compelled to make clear that these tragedies,  are not isolated incidents.

Because they usually only make the local news, people fail to understand that chained dogs often grow angry, neurotic and dangerous from their miserable lives in solitary confinement. Consequently, many of them have seriously injured or killed hundreds of children in the last several years.

Dogs Deserve Better has submitted a letter to the Beaver County Commissioners urging them to follow the lead of many rural and urban areas and to study how an anti-tether ordinance would protect the community's children and dogs.

Dogs are highly social pack animals. They crave human companionship. When kept chained by the neck for years on end, forced to suffer through brutal winters and tormented by parasites and boredom, it should come as little surprise that many of these "lawn ornament" animals become vicious.

Allowing people to keep chained dogs is not only inhumane, it is tantamount to allowing people to keep loaded guns in their yards.

Hundreds of cities, counties and states are finally enacting reasonable laws that tell people it is no longer appropriate to treat dogs in such a negligent way. I urge Beaver County to follow the lead of so many other municipalities and consider enacting an anti-tethering law.

Happy Valentine's Gift for 3 Dogs and a Family in Hobbs, New Mexico!

With the help of DDB New Mexico Rep Amanda Green, three dogs and their caretaker got a treat last Saturday after their caretaker agreed to let her dogs be part of her family and completed a DDB Fencing application.

After being approved, a group of volunteers and family members worked to build a fence, put in a doggie door and removed these dogs from their chains. Please take the time to visit the slide show.

What a neat experience to see dogs go from being perpetually chained to family pets again!
