Dear Tammy,

Valentine Card Making Party"I am a Girl Scout and I don't understand why you got a dog if you don't want to love it?" "I'm a first grader please don't chain your dog." "Freedom is sweet, bring your dog in with your family." "Unchain me and bring me inside with you, then neither of us will be lonely again."

Children and adults alike all over the U.S. and beyond sent in handmade Valentine cards, coupons and sponsored Valentines for Dogs Deserve Better's "Have a Heart for Chained Dogs" week. Volunteers sealed thousands upon thousands of cards in English, Spanish and French into envelopes with a coupon and DDB brochure at Valentine Parties that are being mailed from DDB Headquarters to the addresses you gave us; 10,000 of them!

Just imagine, if only a mere 10% of the "caretakers" who receive a Valentine bring their dogs in, that would be 1,000 less dogs suffering! One thousand dogs saved by Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, elementary school children and YOU!

Success Story
Maggie rescued after 13 years on a chain!

Maggie rescued at last!

What started out as the same old story - divorce, apartment, no pets allowed - turned into a beautiful story with a  happy ending for Joe Maringo and Maggie who lived as a chained backyard dog for 13 years.

Featured Adoptable
Charlie, Pennsylvania

Charlie Man Wants a Forever Home

This is Charlie. Poor Charlie has lived his whole life on a chain. Charlie is approximately 3 years old. He recently was rescued by DDB.

Since arriving in rescue, Charlie has been successfully treated for Heartworm, updated on vaccinations microchipped and neutered.

Charlie is so grateful for attention and is protective of his humans. This is a dog who bonds deeply.

Although Charlie enjoys the company of other dogs, he does not do well with hyper, small breed canines or cats.

Charlie is house trained and crate trained. He gets along with humans of all ages.

Call Marie at 765-664-5376 if you can give Charlie the loving forever home that he deserves.

Tammy Grimes Chosen IDA's Guardian of the Month

Tammy lifts Doogie into a blanket as he is unable to stand

In Defense of Animals honors celebrities each month and Dogs Deserve Better is proud to learn that our founder, Tammy Grimes is February's Guardian of the Month!

IDA's guardian campaign strives to bring about a more just, humane world by modeling responsible, caring and respectful language and behavior toward the animals and the people we encounter at home, in school and in our community.

IDA has this to say about Tammy Grimes,

"In her work and life, Grimes exemplifies the core concept of what being a guardian is all about: respecting animal companions as individuals who need care, attention, and respect to thrive. Her example shows that every person has the capacity to overcome their fears to help those who cannot help themselves. May she continue to succeed in her quest to free dogs from their binding. "

I wanted to tell you how wonderful you are for starting DDB and for all the hard work all of you there do every day on this mission to free dogs living in horrible circumstances.

Since learning about this plight that we all need to get involved in and since I have been a volunteer at my local Humane Society for the past 8 years, I have on a smaller scale tried to get the word out here, helped free some penned and chained dogs.

I have even changed our adoption agreement to include a clause that if we find out a dog adopted from our shelter is being penned or chained over 10 hours a day that we can come on to their property and take the dog back.

Hero - The Shelter DogRecommended Reading: The Shelter Dog

Christine Davis has donated 8 of her The Shelter Dog books to us at DDB, and we've already purchased more, they're that good! Truly for all ages, we believe they light up the heart.

Filled with beautiful illustrations, this simple book tells the story of an angel dog who comes back to earth to experience the joy of being adopted.

He waits patiently in an animal shelter, hoping today will be the day his forever family finds him. But will anyone be able to see how extraordinary this old shelter dog, with the wobbly back leg, really is?

New DDB Design! Vote for the Dogs
New Design from DDB:I don't care if you're a Republicrat or Demoblican: I'm voting for your dog

No matter what political party you favor, before you vote, please remember to research each candidate's stance on animal issues.

During this election season, tell all you meet that you don't care what political party they represent - Your vote goes to unchaining their dog!

Our movement is growing, expanding, making HUGE strides, thanks to your help. Please stick with us, we really CAN change the world for chained and penned dogs.
