Dear Tammy,

Art for Animal AdvocatesMy dog can't vote.  Even if the Constitution gave him the right, I doubt he'd know what to do with it.  I'd imagine he'd elect me President considering he thinks I'm about the greatest person in the world. No, my dog doesn't vote, but I do and I vote to protect man's best friends from suffering.  No dog would vote to live 24/7 on the end of a chain.  Our dogs want to be with us.

Many DDB Reps find themselves fighting to just have the basic laws upheld for 24/7 chained and penned dogs. Some reps are still battling for enforcement of basic laws for these chained dogs that are already in existence, requiring food, water and shelter.  Other DDB Reps fight to have laws changed.  It's all a challenge that we at DDB work hard at and we are conquering one step at a time.

One thing is certain, our dogs do not have the power to vote, but we do and we will vote for those who use their power for good. Write letters to your Mayor, Commissioners,
legislatures, newspapers and send along brochures and reminder that YOU are a voting tax payer! Take an active step in changing the lives of chained dogs near you! Donate to DDB, already working to change the lives of 24/7 chained/penned dogs across the globe.

North Carolina - Animal Abuse Punished Thanks to DDB Rep Shari Strader

Dog abuser gets caught thanks to DDB RepThanks to DDB Rep Shari Strader, Jack McCall Jr. in High Point, NC was caught on tape kicking, throwing, and choking chained dogs.  He was charged with 3 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty but was eluding police.  He was finally arrested and had his preliminary hearing on Tuesday, August 12th.   His court date is yet to be announced.

Jack McCall has a history of animal abuse and dog fighting.  Among multiple other charges, has been caught dog fighting and was convicted of misdemeanor animal cruelty in 2001.  He obviously does not intend to stop.

Shari asks that we call the Guilford County and High Point District Attorneys and tell them that Jack McCall should be charged with FELONY animal cruelty if you agree.  Tell them that McCall has established a pattern of abuse and will not stop until he is held accountable.  Remind them of the link between animal abuse and child/spousal abuse.

McCall must be stopped before more innocent victims fall prey to his abuse.

Meet Marie Belanger, Indiana
New DDB National Rep Coordinator

Marie Belanger and her pooches In 2004 Marie started searching for a way to help her neighbor's dogs that she believed were being used to fight. "I always saw them chained and miserable. I was researching on the Internet and stumbled upon DDB." Marie said.  Marie says she joined the Dogs Deserve Better members yahoo group and started reading what other people were doing to help these forgotten dogs which gave her the inspiration to take action.

"My neighbor no longer has his dogs and I think he's in jail." Marie stated proudly.

In 2005 Marie started attending ordinance committee meetings and providing the members with educational materials and photos of chained dogs in Marion, Indiana. After much grueling work that lasted several months, the group came up with a 3-hour tethering limit in Marion, which went into effect September 1st 2006. Sometime between the start of that work and getting the ordinance passed, Marie applied for and was accepted as a Representative for DDB and never looked back.

In July 2008, Marie accepted the challenging position of DDB National Rep Coordinator which makes her responsible for oversight and coordination of over 100 DDB Area Representatives.

"I strongly believe in the mission of DDB and have nothing but the utmost respect for each and every Rep who does this difficult and heartbreaking work because in the end, we do it for the Dogs!" Marie Bellanger, DDB National Rep Coordinator.

Indea Update

Indea taking a walk after surgery
Many of you have been writing in regarding Indea, the Lhasa Apsos who escaped a life of abuse and was in desperate need of special vet care.

The good news is she had her re-check visit with the specialist who said her recovery thus far is nothing short of miraculous. She is walking now although a bit like a drunken sailor! Even though she's regained mobility, she's still on lots of crate rest and she's still taking pain meds and a muscle relaxer.

She's very displeased that she is not allowed to play with her tennis ball yet! It may be another month before the specialist will be willing to deem her fully recovered, a herniated disc takes time to heal, but he seems confident she'll be fine. She'll have to deal with some restrictions (like no stairs, and no jumping), but she'll get to play with her tennis ball again soon enough. Read more about Indea

Success Story
Kodi: Chained Dog Turned Couch Potato

Kodi enjoying the good life

South Carolina - His name was Meathead, but not any longer. He is now named Kodi and he is enjoying not having a chain around his neck after 7+ years!

South Carolina Representative Alicia Schwartz said her friend Bonnie never gave up on him and would visit him daily while chained.

With help from Alicia, Bonnie took Kodi home with her to foster and it looks like he is not going anywhere (except maybe the couch!)

Here is the latest from Bonnie, Kodi's new mom: Please find pictures of KODI (formerly known as Meathead) attached. He loves being around people, being indoors, dog beds, couches, car rides, etc.

Amazing Grace, Indiana

Amazing Grace needs a forever home

Indiana - I'm Grace. I am a Huggle! Husky/ Beagle mix. Don't you just love my beautiful blue eyes? I was left outside, chained and alone unsupervised. I was visited by a handsome guy and we made 7 puppies. I was left out there, chained in the cold with my puppies and most of them succumbed to the frigid weather. My human left me with a family member.  She had no room for me so she called Dogs Deserve Better.  I was a very good Mommy and I loved taking care of my babies, but they're adopted out and I'm alone.

I know I am not a puppy - but I am a sweetie pie who needs some love and a home where I can live inside and be adored for the beautiful lady I am. I am 1 1/2 years old, I love my tennis ball and I'm learning to walk like a lady on a leash.  Please take me home - Contact Marie to adopt me.
