A
Chained Dog's Life
As
I lay here chained to my doghouse I remember the days gone by
when I used to be a little puppy and kept everyone up with my cry
The
little boy that bought me used to ruffle my fur and play ball
now I hardly see him and some days not at all
I
remember how he threw a stick as I ran lightning fast to retrieve
now he takes his stick and ball and plays with his friend Steve
I
vaguely remember the daily walks and romping in the grass
I have not been loose from this old chain, one year at least has
passed
My
coat is very tangled and under my collar is sore
I know I have a couple of ticks, maybe even more
Some
days I get fresh water, but most times a little stale
I don't complain about the food, just wish I had some in my pail
My
eyes are a little cloudy, could that be the boy coming my way?
It is dark outside but I see the light, is it the beginning of a
new
day?
I
felt someone petting my head and two hands rubbing my ears
My chain and collar just disappeared and she soothed away my fears
I
saw that it was a beautiful lady who had wings upon her back
she threw a stick across the yard and the she gave me a little pat
"Take
your time she said, you need not hurry"
and as I started to go I noticed that my eyes were not blurry
Then
I felt I was going a little bit faster, almost to a full run
as I looked down at my coat I had no ticks or tangles, "boy,
this is
fun"
I
followed the lady down a long and narrow path as happy as can be
and I only looked back once, for now I am free!
