Herrin, Illinois – March 2, 2009
A reward of $1000 is being offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the death of a local dog by animal cruelty.
On the morning of February 15, 2009, at 1:45am, a concerned citizen found a Chow mix puppy, about 5 months old, on the side of Freeman Spur Blacktop, in the Freeman Spur vicinity including West Frankfort and Herrin, Williamson County, Illinois. The dog was alive but had been beaten so severely that she was unable to be saved. Upon receiving treatment from a Veterinarian it was determined that the dog had been blinded, her back leg was shattered in several places, front leg had been broken previously and was infected, and her neck was so infested with maggots from lacerations due to a life time chaining.
“I haven’t been this upset in a long time”, said Heather, the concerned citizen who found and sought immediate care for the puppy. “It is so unnecessary, and beyond cruel to inflict pain and suffering on a helpless animal who lives solely to be man’s best friend. I hope that my neighbors in Williamson and Franklin County can help find the perpetrator who, if not caught, is a danger to animals and to the entire community.”
Animal cruelty is a felony in Illinois. Studies have proven that a person capable of animal cruelty is a danger to the community and capable of violent crimes to humans. A healthy community takes care of all of its citizens, including its four legged ones. This is not an issue of animal activism, but of the most basic decency that people must be capable of in order for the entire community to be safe. The people of Freeman Spur and its surroundings need everyone’s help to make their community a safer and happier place for all. It is not likely that the perpetrator took the time to travel far from home to dump the dog alongside the road.
